Frank Eber's paintings capture an intense atmosphere and give a strong sense of place without depicting many superficial details. The dominating forces in his works are tone and value, as well as carefully placed strokes of bold colors to create a lasting visual impression. He strives to express the essential life force within land- and cityscapes, urban and everyday situations. The goal is to create an emotional tie with the viewer, but leaving room for interpretation.
He prefers to paint on location whenever possible. The medium of choice is watercolor for its quick drying capabilities and spontaneity. There is no substitute for being onsite, taking in the sounds, smells, and personality of a place. He lives in the south of France, surrounded by vineyards, lavender fields, and mountains. The Provence landscapes and street scenes in old French towns are ideal subjects to paint in Watercolor. The goal is always to work "in the zone", unencumbered by thought and concern. When it happens, the painting reveals itself...
He thinks it is essential as an artist to continually evolve and grow, just as it is in life in general. It's a process, not a destination.
Painting and drawing have always been part of Frank's life. Illustration is his background. He was mentored by the Italian master painter Renato Casaro in 1994. Frank worked as a cover artist for video sleeves in the early 90s, and as an illustrator in advertising after that. He is experienced working with gouache, oil, acrylics, and of course, watercolor.
